A former head of Zodia Custody has landed his next gig. Maxime de Guillebon has joined BNY Mellon where he will become head of digital asset product. de Guillebon left Ireland-based Zodia Custody last January when the company announced that it had hired former BitStamp CEO Julian Sawyer as its new CEO.
BNY Mellon has made a string of senior hires as it builds out its digital assets services and products.
Caroline Butler, who took an internal promotion to become CEO of custody and digital assets at BNY Mellon in February, announced the hiring of de Guillebon. She wrote that “Max brings a depth of industry experience creating and running digital asset businesses. His global experience managing roles across both traditional and digital firms, uniquely positions him to support our company’s ongoing efforts to shape the future of digital finance.”
Based in London, de Guillebon took over as CEO of Zodia Custody in December of 2020. Prior to that, he had spent more than 14 years at Standard Chartered Bank. He spent most of his final three years at Standard Chartered as part of SC Ventures, a unit of the bank focused on digital assets innovation inside and external to the bank. Prior that he was head of digital platforms at Standard Chartered in Singapore.
Zodia Custody is owned by Standard Chartered and Northern Trust.
Butler also added Rachel Willis as her chief of staff. Willis was most recently a senior manager in BlockFi’s public relations and communications group. She started her career at Edelman.
